Mascarpone: The Creamy Elegance

Allow me to introduce you to the magic of mascarpone cheese. Originating from the picturesque lands of Italy, this delicate creation was initially reserved for desserts. However, its creamy subtlety brings an unexpected taste when paired with the caramelized onions. The result? An Onion Tart that is so unique and delicious it will please any crowd.

Crafting Your Onion Tart:

Let’s embark on the creation of this masterpiece, step by step. Start by pulsing 1 cup of flour, 3 tablespoons of butter, 4 tablespoons of water, and a pinch of salt in a food processor until they form a dough. Roll this dough out onto a parchment paper for easier transfer unto the pie plate. Whether using a petite 9-inch pie dish or opting for a larger format to suit your occasion, this tart adapts effortlessly (you might need to double the dough for a larger dish or tray).

A Symphony of Layers

Begin with 120 grams of velvety mascarpone cheese, generously spread over the awaiting crust. Gently sprinkle fragrant thyme leaves (without stems) and a touch of salt, setting the stage for the starring ingredient – the onions. Slice your onions into half-moon shapes, approximately 1/2 inch thick. Arrange them with care, double layering where needed. For this rendition, I utilized 3 small onions. To amplify their sweetness, drizzle some olive oil, honey, and a pinch of salt over these layers.

Set your oven to 350 degrees and let it bake for 40 minutes. As the aroma spreads through your kitchen, it’ll be hard to wait until the end. But the wait is worth it! When the 40 minutes are over, let it broil for 1-2 minutes to add a tantalizing golden crown to the onions. And there you have it – a masterpiece.

I’ve always adored dishes that blur the lines between casual gatherings and refined occasions. This Onion Tart seamlessly bridges this gap. Whether presented as an appetizer to impress at a party or enjoyed as a wholesome family lunch, its layers of flavor and contrasting textures never fail to elicit applause. This is more than a dish – it’s an experience that brings people together, enriching your table with conversations and smiles.
